Seal between stainless steel piston rod and cylinder gap

Jun 01, 2022

As we all know, the stainless steel piston rod is a connecting part used in the cylinder motion execution part to support the work of the piston. Only one end of the piston rod of the cylinder has a piston rod. Air is supplied from one side of the piston to gather energy to generate air pressure.

The stainless steel piston rod connects the piston and the crosshead, transmits the force acting on the piston and drives the piston to move. However, during the use of the stainless steel piston rod, the cylinder has a gap, so we must seal the gap.

Under normal circumstances, the seal between the stainless steel piston rod and the cylinder gap is mainly sealed by packing. Packing seal is a dynamic seal mainly used in the moving parts of process machines and equipment in the machinery industry, such as the plunger or piston rod of a compressor and the seal between the valve stem of a linear and helical motion valve and the fixed body.

The packing seal of the stainless steel piston rod mainly relies on the gas pressure difference before and after the seal to obtain a self-tightening seal. The clearance in the piston rod packing ring generally has the following clearances: Cut clearance: mainly used to compensate for the wear of the packing ring. Axial clearance: It is mainly used to ensure that the packing ring can float freely, otherwise the piston rod cannot work normally. Radial clearance: Avoid the compression of the packing ring due to the sinking of the piston rod, so as to avoid deformation or damage.

It can be seen from the above content that the gap between the stainless steel piston rod and the cylinder can be sealed with packing. However, when using packing sealing, different packing sealing structures should be selected according to the actual situation such as the pressure difference of the gas before and after sealing, the properties of the gas, and the requirements for sealing.
